‘ANGELO BABSIES’, an exhibition of watercolour paintings by
MARIO JEROME 17-20 September 2020.

Mario began working on these series of paintings in late 2019 and continued throughout Covid. Unusually as with others facing this pandemic painting for him has become part of the ordinary routines of everyday living which was not there before and has been a daily delight to engage with. The closeness of death has made each day contain the joys of what appears to be ordinary and seeing and feeling the sweetness of life in that ordinariness.

These paintings stem from and derive from his early childhood and playing freely which ironically he says was missing then. He believes that their existence, style, colour and structure is being driven from something beyond his volition, needing to be expressed and be made visible. He is being painted rather than he is painting.His paintings are called Angelo Babsies as they represent his most innocent early selves who he says have been waiting for him. There’s 13 Angelo Babsies as the 13th reminds him of the uninvited guest, the not bellonging, an indispensable force for the soul of the world in these very difficult times.
